Rangers won a record ninth NPFL title last season. They opened the new one at home and did not win it, which is the sort of result that reads as nothing in September and as a great deal in May.

Enyimba had the worse afternoon. They lost 2 to 1 at Niger Tornadoes, and a beaten Enyimba on the opening round is the result that tends to travel furthest in Nigerian football.

The rest of the opening round

Shooting Stars beat Inter Lagos 2 to 1 in the Friday opener. Barau beat Nasarawa United 3 to 1 and Ikorodu City beat Ranchers Bees by the same score, the two heaviest wins of the round.

Rivers United beat Plateau United 2 to nil and Doma United beat Sporting Lagos by the same margin. Bendel Insurance beat Warri Wolves 2 to 1, and Kwara United and Kano Pillars drew 2 to 2.

One match is not finished. Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat were goalless when heavy rain stopped play after 73 minutes, and the remaining 17 minutes were scheduled for Monday. Until they are played, the round has nine results and one fragment.

What a bettor should take from it

Opening round prices in the NPFL are built on last season’s table, because there is nothing else to build them on. That is the point in the calendar where the market and the form are furthest apart, and it usually takes four or five rounds before the two converge.

A note on the detail. Only one of the two match reports names the goalscorers and the venues, so AXN Sports has not published either. The scores, the pairings and the abandonment are carried consistently by both.

Where to bet: NPFL matches are priced in naira on SportyBet and Bet9ja, both operating under Nigerian state licences, with match result, both teams to score, correct score and booking codes that let you share a slip. Deposits run through OPay, Moniepoint and bank transfer. Domestic Nigerian football carries thinner markets than the European leagues on the same coupon, and the prices move more on team news, so compare the two books before you stake.
