NFF Asks Super Falcons Technical Crew to Step Down

The Nigeria Football Federation has asked the entire Super Falcons technical crew, headed by Justine Madugu, to step down with immediate effect, four days after the play off defeat that ended Nigeria’s 2027 World Cup hopes.

South Africa won 2 to 1 on Thursday 13 August at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and with it took the place at the finals in Brazil. Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane scored for South Africa, Christy Ucheibe replied from the penalty spot. Nigeria had already left the tournament itself at the quarter final stage, beaten 1 to 0 by Cameroon.

The federation announced the decision on Monday 17 August through its official account, stating that the executive committee had asked members of the technical crew to step down with immediate effect. It gave no reason and named no successor. Two things are worth noting for anyone reading the coverage: the federation’s own website still carried nothing on the decision two days later, and while the Nigerian press has reported this as a sacking, the wording the federation actually used is a request to step down. That distinction is not trivial for a coaching staff who will be looking for their next job.

For Nigerian football the immediate question is who takes a squad that remains among the strongest on the continent and rebuilds it around a qualifying cycle that has just closed. The Super Falcons have been the reference point for women’s football in Africa for three decades, and missing a World Cup is the kind of result that usually reshapes a programme rather than just a bench. AXN Sports will follow the appointment and update as the federation names a replacement.
