Zambia claimed their first two medals of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in the boxing ring, with Catherine Mwape and Emmanuel Katema both taking bronze.
Mwape made history in the women’s 54kg category, becoming the first Zambian female boxer to win a Commonwealth Games medal. Her bronze rewarded a fearless run through a tough draw and gave the national team its breakthrough moment in Scotland. Katema followed soon after with bronze in the men’s 65kg division, sealing Zambia’s second podium finish of the Games.
Not every story ended in celebration. Albert Ngulube bowed out in the men’s 60kg quarter-final after a narrow 2-3 split decision against Jude Gallagher of Northern Ireland, a result that could easily have gone the other way. His display still underlined the depth coming through Zambian amateur boxing.
The two medals continue a proud tradition in the sport, following the exploits of names such as Catherine Phiri and Stephen Zimba on the international stage. With a young squad gaining major-tournament experience in Glasgow, the Zambia Boxing Federation will hope this haul feeds momentum toward future Games and world-level events.
