Uganda played four matches at the 2024 T20 World Cup, their first appearance at a senior global tournament, and won one of them. This is the full record.
The Cricket Cranes were drawn in Group C with Afghanistan, New Zealand, West Indies and Papua New Guinea, and every match was played in the Caribbean. They finished fourth in the group.
The four matches
Afghanistan won the opening game by 125 runs. Uganda then beat Papua New Guinea by three wickets in Guyana, bowling the Pacific side out for 77 and reaching 80 for 7 in the nineteenth over. West Indies bowled Uganda out for 39, the joint lowest total in the history of the tournament. New Zealand won the last group match by nine wickets.
The win over Papua New Guinea
It was the first World Cup match Uganda had ever won, in any sport. Frank Nsubuga, who was 43, bowled four overs for 4 runs and took two wickets, the most economical four over spell recorded at a men’s T20 World Cup. Riazat Ali Shah made 33 and was named player of the match after Uganda had lost half their side cheaply.
What the tournament left behind
Two records went into the books on the same trip, one at each end of the scale: Nsubuga’s spell and the 39 all out. Both still stand as reference points whenever Uganda are discussed at this level.
The squad that played in the Caribbean is also the core of the side that has since worked through the ICC fifty over pathway, so the names on those four scorecards are not a closed chapter. Anyone following Ugandan cricket now is following the same group of players.
