Joshua Cheptegei leads a Ugandan entry that covers all three events at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on 19 and 20 September.
Uganda Athletics named the team after the national road running trial in Tororo last month. World Athletics published its final entry lists on 5 September, and Ugandan runners appear in the half marathon, the 5km and the road mile.
Cheptegei heads the half marathon entry
Cheptegei is entered in the men’s half marathon alongside Mande Bushendich, Feb Chelegoi and Martin Kiprotich. The women’s half marathon carries Esther Chebet, Esther Yeko Chekwemoi, Annet Chemengich Chelangat and Rebecca Chelangat.
The federation and the World Athletics entry list give different totals for how many Ugandans travel, so the exact size of the party is not settled. What both agree on is the spread: Uganda has runners in every race on the programme.
Cherop steps up to the 5km
Charity Cherop runs the women’s 5km after taking gold at the World Under 20 Championships. Martha Chemutai is entered in the same race. Alex Kiplangat and Keneth Kiprop take the men’s 5km.
The road mile brings Silas Chemutai and Hosea Kiprop for the men, with Felister Chekwemoi and Patience Cherop in the women’s field. A mile on the road is the shortest distance Uganda contests at a World Athletics championship, and it sits two days away from a half marathon on the same start list of countries.
Uganda built its recent distance record on the track and over cross country. Copenhagen asks the same runners for three different distances inside one weekend, which is why the entry spreads across so many names rather than leaning on two or three.
Where to bet: road running is priced thinly in Uganda, so expect outright winner and head to head markets rather than the deeper menus you get on football.
