Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will contest the MTN8 final on Saturday 10 October, after Pirates put Sekhukhune United out by four goals to nil on aggregate and Sundowns came through against Golden Arrows on away goals.
Pirates settled their tie first. They beat Sekhukhune United by three goals to nil on Saturday 29 August, having already taken the first leg by a single goal, and finished the semi final four goals to nil ahead.
Sundowns had the harder night. They went to the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday 30 August a goal down from the first leg and won by three goals to two, Cassius Mailula, Marcelo Allende and Antonio van Wyk scoring, with Junior Dion and Philani Khumalo replying for Golden Arrows. The tie finished three all and Sundowns went through on away goals.
The goal times are not published here. Only one report carries them, and a single source is not enough for a detail that fine.
What Pirates are chasing
This is a fifth MTN8 final in a row for Pirates, and they are going for a fifth title in a row with it. Nothing in the competition’s history matches that run, and it is the reason the October date carries more than the usual cup weight for them.
Sundowns arrive from the opposite direction. They lost the first leg at home, needed a comeback away from home to survive, and reached the final without ever leading the tie until the aggregate score was settled by the away goals rule.
The venue is still open
The date is fixed for Saturday 10 October. The venue is not. Reports since the semi finals have put the final in different places and the league has not published a confirmation, so AXN Sports is not naming one until it does. For a match between these two clubs the ground decides the capacity, and the capacity decides how much of the country gets in.
