Bloodstock South Africa turned over R106.12 million at its August Two-Year-Old Sale in Germiston, a rise of thirty two per cent on last year and the highest figure the sale has produced.
The sale was held over two days on 20 and 21 August at the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston. Just over three hundred horses were sold. The average price came out at R351,391, about twelve per cent up on 2025, and the aggregate rose from R80.505 million to R106.12 million.
A Vercingetorix colt set the record
The most expensive lot was Ragazinno, a colt by Vercingetorix offered by Varsfontein Stud, bought by Form Bloodstock for R6 million. That is the highest price the August sale has recorded. Varsfontein also finished the two days as the leading vendor by aggregate.
An August two year old sale is a different market from a yearling sale. The horses catalogued here have already been broken in and are close to racing, so a buyer is paying for a runner rather than a project, and the prices tend to move with how confident trainers and owners feel about the season immediately in front of them.
Why the number matters
The comparison that carries the story is the one with 2025. Turnover was R80.505 million then and R106.12 million now, on a similar sized catalogue, so the money in the ring grew faster than the number of horses passing through it. For a racing public that follows the same colours from season to season, the practical effect is that a larger share of this term’s two year olds went to the stronger yards.
Several figures reported around the sale are not repeated here because only one source carried them, including the clearance rate, the median price and the identity of the leading buyer by aggregate.
