South African horse racing has handed owners a significant boost. Race Coast has approved a rise in annual prize money of about 20 percent, taking the combined investment to R270 million, one of the biggest increases the sport has seen locally in years.
The current structure runs until 31 October, and a new one takes effect on 1 November, timed to open the Cape Summer Festival of Racing. That festival has grown into the highlight of the second half of the season, drawing the best horses south for a run of Grade 1 features.
Weekend racing continues in the meantime, with a full card at Hollywoodbets Scottsville among the fixtures keeping punters busy after the Champions Season. Bigger stakes tend to attract stronger fields, which in turn sharpens the betting.
