Nigeria’s D’Tigress are deep into preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The five time AfroBasket champions opened camp in Chicago, then head to Haikou in China for friendlies in early August before a training block in Tenerife, Spain, against Spain and Belgium. The World Cup tips off in Berlin in September.

The squad blends WNBA and European experience, with former WNBA forward Amy Okonkwo among the names, and it carries real belief after another continental title. Few African teams travel with this kind of pedigree.

There is more Nigerian basketball to follow this month. The junior teams are at the FIBA U18 AfroBasket in Abidjan from 4 August, and the Junior D’Tigers arrived on the back of an unbeaten run through their zone qualifiers.
