Tusker beat Gor Mahia by three goals to one at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 23 August to win the 2026 FKF Super Cup. Police fired tear gas after the final whistle, and supporters who came onto the pitch pulled down the stage set up for the trophy presentation.
The Super Cup is the curtain raiser to the FKF Premier League, which opens on Saturday 29 August. Gor Mahia arrived as reigning league champions and Tusker as holders of the national cup, so the match put last season’s two trophy winners against each other. Tusker take the first piece of silverware of the new campaign, and they took it off the champions.
Tear gas at the trophy presentation
Some supporters had already walked out before the end. After the whistle others came onto the field and dismantled the dais built for the presentation, and police used tear gas to clear the pitch, then again to restore order. Reporters working at the ground were caught up in it, and several said afterwards that their equipment had been damaged.
The Football Kenya Federation responded the same evening. “There is no place for violence, destruction of property, intimidation or any conduct that puts the safety of players, journalists, officials, fans, security personnel and the public at risk,” it said. On the policing, it added that while security agencies have a responsibility to maintain order, “such measures must be exercised with restraint, professionalism and in accordance with the law.” The federation said it would review match footage with the authorities, and that anyone found to have breached its regulations or the law, whether a fan, club official, steward or security officer, should face action through due process.
The timing is awkward. Proceedings over the 2025 promotion and relegation regulations are still before the High Court, so the eighteen clubs on the fixture list are settled on paper rather than in law, and the season starts in under a week. A curtain raiser that finished with a broken stage and tear gas at Nyayo is not the image the federation wanted going into it. AXN Sports will follow the review and the opening weekend fixtures.
