Kabras Sugar came from behind to beat KCB in the Driftwood Sevens final at Mombasa Sports Club, cutting the defending champions’ lead at the top of the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit to three points with two legs to play.
KCB led at the interval. Kabras scored after the break to turn the final around, and the win was their second of the circuit, which is what makes the standings interesting rather than settled.
A note on the detail. The reports of the final do not agree on the score, so AXN Sports has not published it. The winner, the comeback and the circuit position are carried consistently across the coverage.
Two legs, three points
Driftwood was the fourth of six legs. Embu follows on 5 and 6 September, then the Christie Sevens in Nairobi on 12 and 13 September, the sixtieth edition, and the leg after which the overall champion is crowned.
Three points across two weekends is nothing at all in a circuit that awards them by finishing position. A single final swings it. KCB still hold the lead, and they now have to defend it twice more against a side that has just beaten them.
What Mombasa said about the season
The pattern of the year has been the two of them and a gap. Kabras have now taken two legs, and KCB have been consistent enough across the four to stay in front anyway. That is a title race decided on margins rather than on form, and it comes down to two weekends.
