Simba beat Mighty Wanderers by one goal to nil in Lilongwe and Yanga drew one all in Gaborone, so both Tanzanian clubs go into the return legs in Dar es Salaam without a deficit.
Anicet Oura scored the only goal at the Bingu National Stadium in the second half. It came from a defensive error as a long ball was played forward. The opening half had been even, with chances at both ends, and Simba then held the lead while Wanderers pushed substitutes forward late on.
Yanga rescue a point in stoppage time
Amseb put Gaborone United ahead in the first half and Yanga looked beaten until Seleman Mwalimu equalised deep in stoppage time. The Tanzanian champions had pressed for most of the second half without finding a way through.
An away goal changes what Yanga need at home. A win or a goalless draw sends them through, and the equaliser means a one goal defeat in Dar es Salaam no longer settles the tie.
Both second legs are at the Azam Complex
Simba and Yanga host their return matches at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam next week. Simba need a draw or a win to progress and Wanderers have to overturn a single goal away from home. Aggregate scoring decides these ties, so the clean sheet Simba kept in Lilongwe is worth as much to them as the goal that won the match.
The winners move into the second preliminary round. Neither tie is settled, so it is the second legs rather than these first legs that will decide whether Tanzania keeps two clubs in the Champions League beyond September.
Where to bet: CAF Champions League markets are priced in shillings at Betway and Premier Bet, both licensed by the Gaming Board of Tanzania, covering match result, both teams to score, over and under and qualification outrights. Deposits run through M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa and Airtel Money. A two legged tie prices the aggregate rather than the ninety minutes, so the qualification market and the match result market can move in opposite directions.
