Defending champions Yanga began the 2026/27 NBC Premier League with a 3 to 1 win away at Namungo on Saturday 15 August at Majaliwa Stadium, two days after the sixteen club season kicked off.

Chadrack Boka opened the scoring on 68 minutes and Maxi Nzengeli added a second four minutes later. New signing Peter Shalulile also scored, with Herbert Lukindo replying for Namungo on 76 minutes. It was a controlled rather than commanding start, which is roughly what a champion side wants from a long trip in the opening round.

The bigger story around the club arrived on the same day. Yanga president Hersi Said told supporters the club had agreed to sell Ugandan attacking midfielder Allan Okello to AS FAR Rabat, whose coach Pedro Goncalves is a former Yanga head coach. Okello arrived from Vipers SC in January and scored 14 goals in half a season, so this is a significant piece of business rather than squad trimming. Figures for the fee have circulated widely in the Ugandan and Kenyan press, none of them confirmed by either club, so AXN Sports is not publishing a number.

Selling your most productive attacking midfielder in the same week you start a title defence is a choice that will be judged in November rather than August. Yanga have reinvested, Shalulile’s goal on debut helps the argument, and Simba will not need much invitation to make an issue of it. The NBC Premier League runs to May, which is a long time to carry a decision like that.
