Jacob Kiplimo is deep in preparation for his Chicago Marathon title defence, and Uganda’s distance fans have plenty to track through August.
Kiplimo arrived at this training block on the back of a stunning London Marathon in April, where he finished in 2:00:28, the third fastest marathon in history. That performance came on a day when the two hour barrier fell, and it confirmed his rapid rise from the track to the roads. The former world half marathon record holder has adapted quickly to the longer distance.
The next target is clear. Kiplimo has confirmed he will defend his Bank of America Chicago Marathon crown on 11 October, and his build up is already under way with coach Peter Chelangat. August and September form the heavy training phase, so any tune up appearances will draw close attention at home in Uganda.
Joshua Cheptegei adds to the interest. The double Olympic champion has turned his focus to the marathon after a decorated track career, and his move keeps Uganda near the front of global distance running. Between Kiplimo and Cheptegei, the country carries real hope of a marathon major title in the months ahead.
