Nigeria Has One Month to Elect a New Basketball Board

Nigeria has one month to elect a new basketball board. FIBA set 15 October 2026 as the last day of the current Nigeria Basketball Federation mandate, and with the Women's Basketball World Cup now finished, the window it left for the vote is open and short.

The instruction came in a letter dated 16 March 2026 from the FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis. It recognised the board led by Musa Kida as the legitimate authority, fixed the end of its mandate at 15 October and said the new board takes office on 16 October. FIBA also said it would not recognise any amendment to the federation statutes until the electoral process is complete.

The same letter told Nigeria to hold the vote after the Women's Basketball World Cup, which ended on 13 September. That leaves the whole election inside a single month.

Why the month is tight

The federation constitution does not allow a congress to be called at short notice. The board has to meet to set the dates, present its financial reports and propose an electoral committee. State associations then have to be given twenty one days of notice before an extraordinary congress, which itself has to be held with observers present. Only after that can the electoral committee publish guidelines and open nominations.

As of the second week of September, none of those steps had become publicly visible. There is no announced congress date, no confirmed electoral committee and no published screening timetable, which is what has put the 16 October handover in question in Nigerian reporting.

What is actually at stake

Nigeria has been here before, and it cost the country years. Nigerian reporting on the March decision described a federation still recovering from years of administrative crises and from international sanction, with the FIBA letter treated as the thing that settled who was in charge. Missing a deadline that FIBA itself set is the kind of thing that reopens that file, and the next board inherits the league calendar, the national team programme and the funding argument with it.

The next piece of business is not far off. The World Cup qualifying window that decides Qatar 2027 for the D'Tigers falls at the end of February 2027, and whoever is in office in October will be the people who plan for it.
