Yanga beat Gaborone United by two goals to one at the Azam Complex on Saturday and went through by three goals to two on aggregate, setting up a CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie with CFFA of Madagascar.
Peter Shalulile put Yanga ahead in the seventh minute at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam. Cheick Ibrahima Toure added the second late in the second half, and Lebogang Ditsele pulled a goal back for Gaborone United in the 87th minute.
The first leg left the tie open
Yanga had drawn one all away in Botswana on 5 September, so the Tanzanian champions went into the return without a deficit and without a cushion. Ditsele’s late goal briefly put the aggregate back within reach of the visitors, who needed one more to force the tie into extra time.
Simba, who won their own first leg by one goal to nil away to Mighty Wanderers in Lilongwe, played their return on Sunday.
CFFA of Madagascar next
Yanga meet CFFA of Madagascar in the second preliminary round. CAF has scheduled that round for 16 to 18 October, with the return legs between 23 and 25 October. The winners of the round go into the group stage, which starts in November.
For Yanga this is the stage that decides whether a season is judged a success at home. The club has treated the group stage as the minimum for several years, and the Madagascan champions are the last obstacle before it.
The route is short and unforgiving. Two preliminary rounds stand between a national champion and the group stage, each of them over two legs, and a club that loses either one is out of the Champions League for the season.
Yanga have now come through the first of them having been level after ninety minutes in Botswana and behind on the balance of chances for long stretches of the return. Winning a tie that never looked comfortable is worth more in October than winning one that did.
