Red Arrows beat FC Rouge of Madagascar by two goals to nil in Ndola and Power Dynamos lost by one goal to nil to Al Merreikh in Rwanda, splitting Zambia’s opening weekend in the CAF club competitions.
Eliya Mandanji put Red Arrows ahead in the 39th minute at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium and Alassane Diarra added the second after the restart. It was the first leg of a CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round tie, and the Airmen created enough to have led by more.
Power Dynamos beaten by a penalty in Rwanda
A first half penalty decided the CAF Champions League first leg against Al Merreikh of Sudan, who staged the match in Rwanda. Coach Oswald Mutapa said his side did not start well and that they improved only after the interval.
Power Dynamos host the return on Saturday 12 September at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. A one goal deficit means a two goal win takes them through without a shootout. Red Arrows play their second leg away from home.
A CAF weekend with no league to fall back on
Zambia has no domestic league football this month. The Super League has been wound up in favour of a March to November calendar, and the Transitional League that bridges the gap does not start until October, so the two CAF ties and the national team are the whole Zambian coupon in September.
That gives these matches more weight than a preliminary round usually carries. Red Arrows and Power Dynamos are the only Zambian clubs playing competitive football this month, and both carry their ties into a second leg while the rest of the top flight waits for October.
