Vipers lost at home to Entebbe UPPC by a goal to nil and KCCA were beaten by two goals to nil by NEC, so the two biggest names in Ugandan football both opened the new Premier League season with a defeat.
The champions went down at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, where an own goal in the first half was enough for the visitors. It was Vipers’ first home league defeat since 2024, and it came in their opening fixture of a title defence.
NEC punish KCCA at Lugogo
NEC beat KCCA by two goals to nil at Lugogo through Richard Basangwa and Pius Obuya. KCCA have won the league thirteen times and were beaten inside the opening round by a club that lost the FUFA Super 8 final a fortnight earlier.
BUL beat Express by a goal to nil, and Lugazi beat the promoted Kigezi Home Boyz two goals to one. Those were the results the league and the Kampala newsrooms agreed on, and the round was spread across four days rather than one weekend.
What an opening round is worth to a bettor
Very little on its own, and that is the point. Prices in the first week are set off last season’s table because there is no current form to read, and two of the three heaviest favourites in the country did not win. Squads changed over a transfer window that does not close until 19 September, so the teams that start the season are not always the teams that finish the month.
