The ninth Dar Night Run is staged at the Police Officers Mess in Oysterbay on Saturday 29 August, with the organisers expecting more than two thousand runners against about fifteen hundred a year ago.
The race is run at night, starting at 10:00pm, which is the whole point of it. Dar es Salaam is hot and humid enough through the day that a mass field on the road is a health question rather than a sporting one, and the night slot solves that without shortening the distances.
Two distances and a closed entry
The Runners Club, which organises the event, lists two categories: a 10km Challenge and a 15km Long Night. Entry has closed, which is itself a marker of how the race has grown. The regional athletics association in Dar es Salaam is involved alongside the club, and Castle Lite, Ifakara Health Institute and Skechers are among the sponsors.
The jump the organisers are describing, from roughly fifteen hundred finishers to a target above two thousand, would be the largest single year rise the event has recorded.
Where it sits in the Tanzanian road calendar
Tanzanian road running is built around a handful of large city races rather than a dense domestic track season, and the ones that survive tend to be the ones that find a distinctive slot. Kilimanjaro has February, Dodoma has July, Zanzibar has October. Dar Night Run has the night, and no other race in the country competes for that.
None of this is elite racing. The field is a mass participation field and the distances are set for club runners rather than for national record holders, which is exactly why the entry numbers are the story. AXN Sports will carry the result once the organisers publish it.
