Ghana’s Black Princesses beat Polish club side Sleza Wroclaw by four goals to nil in their first warm up match in Poland on Tuesday, before they open the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup against Ecuador on 6 September.
Jacqueline Ntoso, Priscilla Mensah, Ruth Amponsah and Diana Amoako scored. The match was played behind closed doors, and the reports differ on the minutes, so AXN Sports has not published them.
Charles Sampson took the squad to Poland early rather than flying in for the tournament, which is the useful part of this. A closed door fixture against a Polish league side is the first look he has had at the team in the conditions they will actually play in.
Group C, and the order of it
The tournament runs from 5 to 27 September across Bielsko Biala, Katowice, Lodz and Sosnowiec, with the final in Lodz. Ghana are in Group C with Ecuador, Korea Republic and France.
Ecuador first, on 6 September, then Korea Republic, then France. The order matters as much as the names. Ghana meet France last, so on the run of the group the campaign is likely to be settled before that fixture rather than in it.
Eighth time of asking
This is Ghana’s eighth consecutive appearance at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, and they have never gone past the group stage. That second number is the one the tournament will be measured against, and it is the one the federation has put at the front of its own coverage of the trip.
