Cameroon beat Nigeria 78 to 62 at Rades in Tunisia on Thursday, in the D’Tigers’ first game of the fourth window of the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Nigeria play South Sudan on Friday and Cape Verde on Sunday, all three fixtures at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Rades. Tunisia is hosting the whole of Group E for the window, so the D’Tigers get three games in four days in one hall rather than a home tie anywhere in the run.
The squad that travelled
David Fizdale named a twelve man roster for the window: Chimezie Metu, Josh Okogie, Caleb Agada, Stan Okoye, Chima Moneke, Ike Nwamu, Udoka Azubuike, Efe Abogidi, Ebuka Izundu, Manny Obaseki, Jordan Ogundiran and Paul Dibal. Dan Craig, Quinton Crawford, Deji Akindele and Dapo Adegbile complete the coaching staff.
On paper that is a stronger group than Nigeria has put on the floor for most of this qualifying campaign. The problem the D’Tigers have had is availability rather than talent, and a compressed window that asks for three performances in four days is where a thin rotation shows up.
Two games left in the window
Cameroon were always going to be the hardest of the three, and they came first. What the remaining two fixtures decide is whether Nigeria leave Tunisia in a qualifying position or spend the next window chasing one, and neither South Sudan nor Cape Verde is a comfortable night at this level.
