Uganda will play their first official one day internationals after finishing second in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B, because the Qualifier Play off they have reached carries ODI status.
Uganda finished the Challenge League B on 22 points, behind Italy on 26, and the top two in the group go through. Both now move on to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play off, an eight team tournament made up of the top two from Challenge League A, the top two from Challenge League B, and the bottom four finishers from Cricket World Cup League 2.
What ODI status actually changes
The Play off carries one day international status, which is the part that matters beyond the result. Every Uganda match in it is a full ODI, so the runs and wickets go on the international record rather than into a development ledger. Uganda have never played an official ODI, and that ends at this tournament.
It also changes what a Ugandan cricketer is measured against. Averages built in the Challenge League sit outside the ODI record, so a batter who has scored heavily for years starts an official career from nothing. That is a strange thing to explain to a Kampala crowd, and it is also the reason this tournament will be watched differently from the last one.
The venue and the dates are still missing
The Play off is scheduled for later this year and decides the remaining places at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which is the last gate before the 2027 World Cup. Neither the venue nor the schedule had been announced when this was published. Until they are, there is no way to say where Uganda’s first ODI will be played, and that announcement is the next thing worth waiting for.
